Helium Mobile, a provider of cost-effective phone plans with a unique cryptocurrency compensation mechanism, has experienced a notable surge in registrations accompanied by an increase in the identification of suspicious accounts, as revealed by an unnamed staff member. This growth is attributed to the escalating value of the MOBILE token, which has led to a significant influx of both legitimate and questionable users.

To address the challenges posed by dubious activities and sustain the integrity of its platform, Helium Mobile has recently modified its guidelines pertaining to cryptocurrency rewards associated with its cellular plan. Effective from December 18, new subscribers are now required to wait eight days before becoming eligible to claim any MOBILE tokens earned through Discovery Mapping, a feature allowing users to share their location.

This strategic adjustment is aimed at mitigating the growing pains experienced by Helium's partially crowdsourced cellular network. Since its nationwide launch in early December, the cost-effective phone plan has attracted numerous users intrigued by its distinctive cryptocurrency compensation mechanism. Operating on a hybrid infrastructure utilizing T-Mobile towers and proprietary hotspots hosted by individual operators, Helium Mobile rewards operators and subscribers engaging in location tracking with MOBILE tokens, thereby encouraging network expansion.

Subscribers participating in Discovery Mapping on Helium Mobile currently earn over 2,000 MOBILE tokens per day, a daily earning potential that can offset the $20 monthly subscription cost in just two days. The MOBILE token's remarkable surge of over 2,000% in the past month has played a pivotal role in attracting thousands of new users to Helium Mobile and its mapping service. On Sunday, over 6,700 wallets received MOBILE rewards, per data site Helium Geek, more than double the number a week earlier.

However, this substantial growth has presented challenges, with reports indicating users exploiting the system by accumulating MOBILE tokens for seven days, canceling their phone plans, and leaving with a full refund along with potential significant earnings in MOBILE tokens. In response, Helium Mobile has implemented changes to prevent users from manipulating the program and taking advantage of the cryptocurrency rewards system.

In a Discord post on Monday afternoon, Coco Tang, the director of product for Helium Mobile's parent company Nova Labs, acknowledged the situation, stating,

"Helium Mobile has observed a significant influx of sign-ups, with some appearing more dubious than others."

The guideline adjustments are designed to maintain the integrity of the platform and ensure that the cryptocurrency rewards system remains fair and viable amid the influx of new users.
