The cryptocurrency community is no stranger to scams and fraudulent schemes. But when scammers set their sights on a decentralized social media platform like Friend.tech, it's a stark reminder of the ever-present threats in the crypto space. SlowMist, a renowned cybersecurity investigator, recently unveiled a disconcerting revelation that sent ripples through the industry.

On October 13, SlowMist exposed the disturbing manipulation of Google search results through phishing ads linked to Friend.tech. This development has sparked growing concerns about Google's ability to respond to review inquiries and the growing menace of deceptive advertisements.

In a candid warning to crypto enthusiasts, SlowMist urged caution when dealing with sponsored Google ads. They highlighted how these paid promotions have become an unfortunate playground for scammers to deceive and exploit unsuspecting users. The implications of this exploitation were revealed in a subsequent report by MistTrack, a crypto tracking and compliance platform developed by SlowMist.

MistTrack's report uncovered a trail of pilfered funds, skillfully routed to a suspected scam account. What's even more alarming is the staggering amount involved. Over 670 ETH was traced to this address, likely sourced from victims of various scams. This revelation has brought to light the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for stricter security measures in the crypto advertising landscape.

This isn't the first time Friend.tech has been under attack. Just three days earlier, the platform introduced a two-factor authentication (2FA) feature to combat the escalating threat of SIM-swap attacks targeting its users. This type of attack has become a recurring nightmare for the industry. Friend.tech's proactive response, as detailed in an October 9th post by the app's development team, now allows users to fortify their account security with 2FA, providing a crucial layer of protection in the event of a mobile carrier or email provider compromise.

The recent scrutiny of Friend.tech's struggle against phishing scams and the broader issue of deceptive crypto ads on Google paints a vivid picture of the challenges that crypto enthusiasts face in today's landscape. As the crypto community remains vigilant and adapts to evolving threats, it's clear that safeguarding against scams and fraudulent activities is an ongoing battle that requires the collective efforts of the industry, regulators, and technology giants alike. Stay informed, stay cautious, and stay secure in the ever-expanding world of cryptocurrencies.
